Mercy Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates
Atrial fibrillation is a condition where the heart’s upper chambers beat irregularly, which affects blood flow to the body. Inconsistent blood flow can increase the risk of blood clots and related stroke. Mercy Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates specialize in performing the MAZE procedure for atrial fibrillation
If a patient’s heartbeat does not return to normal with anticoagulant medication (which thins the blood) or electrical shock, a cardiologist may recommend a MAZE procedure. During the procedure surgeons create scar tissue to block the abnormal electrical signals that cause the arrhythmia. The scar tissue creates a path, or maze, that redirects the electric signals to the lower heart chambers. The MAZE procedure can be done as a stand-alone surgery or performed in conjunction with other forms of cardiac surgery such as valve repair or replacement.
