Jim Burdine, M.D., FACS
Jim Burdine, MD is a dual board-certified surgical and cardiothoracic surgeon with more than 30 years experience. He brings significant expertise to Mercy Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates in developing minimally invasive cardiac surgery and robotic heart surgery techniques. His clinical specialties include:
- surgical staging and treatment for lung and esophageal cancer
- off-pump coronary artery bypass using arterial conduits
- mitral valve repair
- aortic root and aortic dissection
- thoracic surgery
- arrhythmia surgery
- ventricular assist device for heart failure
Dr. Burdine practiced at St. Mary’s Duluth Clinic in Duluth, Minnesota before joining Mercy Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates. Previously he worked at MeritCare Health System in Fargo, North Dakota; and the Minnesota Thoracic Associates, P.A. in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Dr. Burdine earned his MD from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He was a resident and intern at University of Minnesota Hospitals in Minneapolis where he also earned his fellowship in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. Dr. Burdine served as a Major in the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps for eight years.
He served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Society of Thoracic Surgeons and Co-Director of the Minneapolis Heart Institute’s Heartmate Program. Dr. Burdine has also served on the board for LifeSource, Upper Midwest Organ procurement Organization, Inc. and developed the interdepartmental program to diagnose and treat early lung cancers for the Lung Cancer Physician Study Group. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the International Society for Heart/Lung Transplantation, and a charter member of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery.
