What's a parent to do?

  • Model healthy eating habits rather than preaching them. Show your teens how to shop. Make each trip to the grocery store a nutrition lesson. Encourage teens to help with shopping selections and dinner planning. This will not only help them become independent adults, it will teach them to connect good food with good health.
  • Talk to your child about the various media outlets that they are exposed to. Kids need to understand that the magazine images of their favorite musician, athlete or model have been altered and airbrushed and are not realistic.
  • Say no to fast and packaged foods (which are low in nutrients and loaded with fats) and drinks which are loaded with sugar, artificial colorings and chemicals that can rob the bones of calcium.
  • Talk to your teen about the link that healthy foods have on growth, clear skin, shiny hair, weight maintenance,
    emotions and athletic performance.
