Definición

Es la capa de tejido sensible a la luz que se encuentra en la parte posterior interna del ojo y actúa como la película en una cámara: las imágenes pasan a través del cristalino del ojo y son enfocadas en la retina. La retina convierte luego estas imágenes en señales eléctricas y las envía a través del nervio óptico al cerebro.

La retina normalmente es de color rojo debido a su abundante suministro de sangre. Un oftalmoscopio le permite al médico ver a través de la pupila y el cristalino hasta la retina. Si el médico observa cualquier cambio en el color o apariencia de la retina, esto puede ser indicio de una enfermedad.

Cualquier persona que experimente cambios en la percepción de la nitidez o del color, destellos de luces, moscas volantes o distorsión en la visión debe hacerse examinar la retina.
