Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty
Purpose of the Procedure
A PTCA is performed to alleviate a blockage in a coronary artery. In many cases, you will have undergone one or more other tests such as electrocardiograms
, or stress tests
which have indicated the existence of a blocked coronary artery. You have most likely experienced symptoms such as angina or you may have already suffered a heart attack. The PTCA is intended to reopen the blood vessels supplying the heart so that heart damage may be avoided or minimized.
