Low-Glycemic Foods may have Heart Benefit
A new, small study shows that eating foods low on the glycemic index may actually protect the heart better than low-fat foods. The glycemic index ranks foods based on how quickly they increase your blood sugar.
Foods that are low on the glycemic index include:
- Non-starchy vegetables
- Legumes, such as dried beans
In general, the higher-fiber foods tend to be lower on the glycemic index.
Dieters in the study who ate low-glycemic foods experienced a larger decrease in fatty substances in their blood. They also had a drop in a protein that interferes with the body’s ability to break down blood clots. Low fat dieters had in increase in this protein, which increased their risk of heart attack.
