New Information about Prostate Cancer Treatment

separator It can be difficult for doctors to determine the best course of treatment for prostate cancer, a disease that affects many men, but only causes death in three percent of cases. A new study shows that three measurements, considered together, can provide additional guidance that can help doctors decide who should have stronger therapy:

  • The amount of time it takes after surgery to detect PSA (prostate-specific antigen) in the blood
  • The amount of time it takes for the PSA to double after the surgery
  • The Gleason score, which measures the aggressiveness of cells that have been examined under a microscope. A Gleason score of 8 or higher is considered most aggressive
