Dark Chocolate for High Blood Pressure?
It appears that dark chocolate may lower blood pressure in
people who have hypertension, according to a study in the journal Circulation
Study participants—all of whom had high blood pressure—ate three and a half
ounces of dark chocolate per day. After two weeks, they demonstrated a decline
in blood pressure.
Researchers believe that a component of Italian dark
chocolate, called flavonoids, is responsible for this reduction. Remember, they
ate only three and a half ounces, not a full-size candy bar. And it was a
high-quality dark chocolate.
If you’d like to see whether you could experience the same
benefit, be sure to adjust the rest of your daily calories to account for the
addition of the chocolate. And whatever you do, don’t stop taking any blood
pressure medication your doctor has prescribed.
