Five Lifestyle Factors to Reduce Heart Risk in Men

separator Diabetes is a primary risk factor for heart disease, and recent research indicates that five simple lifestyle factors may help prevent 62 percent of heart attacks and fatal cardiac events in men. These five include

  • Avoid smoking
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Consume no more than two alcoholic drinks per day
  • Exercise at least 30 minutes per day
  • Follow federal food pyramid guidelines for servings per day of protein, vegetables, fruits and cereals

It's not as if these tips have been a secret, but it's helpful to see the risk factors quantified in this way. The study looked at 42,847 men ages 40 to 75 who had no chronic disease beginning in 1986. At the start of the study, only four percent of the participants followed the five healthy lifestyle factors. But those who adopted two of the lifestyles reduced their risk of heart disease by 27 percent.

Men who did follow all five factors were 87 percent less likely to develop heart disease.
