One in Five Americans has Obesity Syndrome
A recent study has shown that 47 million Americans have obesity syndrome, also called metabolic syndrome. People with the syndrome have any three or more of the symptoms below:
- Abdominal fat-waist measurements of at least 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women
- High blood fats, including cholesterol and triglycerides
- Blood sugar of at least 110 milligrams
- Blood pressure of at least 135/80
The study analyzed data from 8,814 men and women aged 20 or older.
The researchers believe that while heredity may have something to do with the development of obesity syndrome, other factors, such as sedentary lifestyle and poor diet, play a larger role. Obesity syndrome puts people at risk for diabetes, heart attack and stroke.
