Animal Fats may Increase Breast Cancer Risk
Women who eat foods rich in animal fat during the years before menopause have an increased risk of breast cancer, according to a study published recently in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Foods such as red meat, cheese, ice cream and butter are some of the main culprits.
The research was part of the Nurses Health Study, an ongoing look at women who have volunteered to regularly answer questionnaires about their diet and lifestyles. Their responses are analyzed by researchers who keep track of the women’s health.
The study concerning breast cancer and animal fats showed that of more than 90,000 women aged 26 to 46, 714 developed invasive breast cancer over the course of eight years. The women who, in their 20s, 30s and 40s, ate red meat, cheese and other foods made from animal fat had a higher risk of the disease.
