Kids Get Cigarettes Online
You might think kids can’t buy cigarettes until age 18, but a recent study has shown that it’s easy for minors to get their cigarettes on the Internet. Four children, ages 11 to 15, tried to buy cigarettes from 55 online cigarette vendors. The kids were successful more than 90 percent of the time.
The cigarette vendors say they have policies in place to prevent minors from purchasing their products, but it’s actually quite easy to get around the rules. The kids in the study simply checked a box saying they were 18, sent fake driver’s license numbers and ignored requests for photocopied or faxed materials.
On some sites, it states they will deliver the cigarettes only if people show identification at the time of delivery. But in most cases, packages were just left at the door. And in some instances, the teenagers themselves took the delivery.
