Nonoxynol-9 No Protection against STDs

separator A new study shows that nonoxynol-9, a spermicide that helped prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in mice, does not have the same preventive benefit for women. Researchers studied the infection rate among 1,251 women who used condoms plus the spermicide, and those who used condoms alone. The infection rate of chlamydia, a common STD, was the same in each group. The gonorrhea rate, another common STD, was 50 percent higher in the group that used nonoxynol-9.

Nonoxynol-9 is the most commonly used spermicide in the world.
