Best Mattress for Backs
If you’ve got a bad back, chances are you’ve been sleeping on a hard mattress because that’s the advice you’ve been getting. But a recent study has found that people who sleep on medium mattresses are nearly twice as likely to see an improvement in back pain as people who sleep on firm ones.
The study involved 313 participants who had unexplained chronic lower back pain while lying in bed or when getting up in the morning. About 82 percent of people who slept on medium mattresses reported improvement, while only 68 percent of those sleeping on firm mattresses said they had improved.
Of course, there’s always the chance that you might do better on a firmer mattress. The message of this study is that you should try out different beds, and not buy a firm mattress unless you know it’s going to help.
