Diabetes Tips: Staying Active in Cold Weather
"I hate to exercise in the cold. I’ll get back into it when the weather’s nice again.”
It’s tempting, but it’s not going to help you manage diabetes. And your diabetes needs managing even in the winter. What are some ways to stay active when the weather is less than inviting?
Think of television time as activity time.
If you watch television, this is one of the easiest ways to squeeze in exercise. You can stand in front of the TV and march, dance and stretch as an entire show plays out in front of you.
Go to the mall.
Yes, people are still “mall walking,” and it’s a great alternative to walking in freezing temperatures. Go to the biggest mall near you.
Consider joining a gym.
If you’ve always wondered whether you’d enjoy a gym membership, now is the time to find out!
Try swimming, for a change.
Your local YMCA or similar organization may have a pool that you can use
Exercise with friends.
Even if it’s really cold out, if you arrange to get together and walk with friends every Saturday morning, peer pressure is likely to keep you at it, even when it’s cold. And you might even discover that exercising in the cold is refreshing!
