Statin Drugs Lower Risk of Heart Attacks in People with Diabetes

separator A new study has shown that people with type two diabetes can reduce their risk of heart attack by taking cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins, even if their cholesterol levels are normal. In the study, more than 2,800 people with type two took Lipitor, one of the common statin medications. Results showed that

  • They were one third less likely to have a heart attack
  • Half as likely to have a stroke
  • One third less likely to die of any type of cardiovascular disease

These benefits seem to begin at about one year after treatment.

This was the first study whose goal was to examine whether statins are beneficial specifically for people with diabetes.
