T'ai Chi for Arthritis

separator During its recent annual meeting, The American College of Rheumatology issued a recommendation that elderly people who have osteoarthritis, the most common form of the disease, may benefit from doing t'ai chi, a Chinese martial art.

Research presenters at the meeting explained they had compared two groups of arthritis sufferers: one group who enrolled in a 12-week t'ai chi program and another group that did not. The individuals who took t'ai chi showed "significant improvement," which included stronger abdominal muscles and better balance.

T'ai chi is what's known as a "soft" martial art. The movements are slow and fluid. The practice has also been shown to prevent falls in the elderly, and it may help lower blood pressure.
