"Patient is Pain-Free Thanks to daVinci"

Beth M. experienced heavy bleeding and pelvic pain due to endometriosis and uterine fibroids for two decades before finding relief through a hysterectomy. Susan Pohlod, MD, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Robotic Surgery, performed the surgery at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center using the da Vinci surgical robot, and Beth has been thrilled with the results.

"I had undergone other treatments for years, including taking continuous birth control medication for the past three years to stop my periods and minimize my pain," Beth said. "Finally, I decided it was time for a hysterectomy. At 46, I told Dr. Pohlod I was ready. She took a great deal of time in explaining the procedure to me, and I was amazed by the information she gave me about the da Vinci system. And when I had my surgery, it was everything it was promised to be and more. I was only in the hospital 10 hours from start to finish. I had no complications and very little pain or discomfort. My recovery was a breeze in that I was able to return to most normal activities within just a few days."

While Beth was only at St. V’s for a day, the staff there made an impression on her.

"From the time I walked into the hospital, all of the staff members I encountered were just wonderful,” she said. “They kept my husband and sister informed about how I was doing during my surgery, and beforehand they explained everything step by step, in terms I could understand. They just made me feel very comfortable and at ease. They were moving a lot of people through outpatient surgery quickly but they took time to talk and joke with me. I appreciated that. I had never had a major surgery before, so I was concerned about complications, pain and scarring. But Dr. Pohlod only had to make five very small incisions, and even though my case was complex – she found my bladder was adhered to my uterus, so surgery took a little longer than expected, but the outcome was still amazing."

Beth was able to walk up a flight of stairs at home the second day after her surgery, and she never needed strong pain medication, taking nothing except Motrin 800s.

"By three days post-surgery, I was doing about 80 percent of my usual activities, per my post-op instructions," Beth said. "I avoided heavy lifting at first, and I returned completely to normal activities in two weeks. I would recommend this surgery to anyone needing a hysterectomy. I would do it again - it was that easy! I was so happy with my results that when I went in for my follow-up appointment with Dr. Pohlod, I took her flowers and chocolates to say thank you. After all of those years of suffering, I am finally pain-free, thanks to Dr. Pohlod and the da Vinci procedure - I have never felt this good in my life!"

Beth was not the only person who said “thank-you” after her surgery. She was impressed when she received a thank-you card from the staff at St. V’s shortly after her procedure.

"That was a nice touch" she said. "I would recommend St. V’s to anyone, and I would go there again for any healthcare needs - they are top-notch!"
